ESUJ's big annual event, the University Debating Competition took place again this year, on October13
and 14 at the National Olympics Memorial Center. This year agin, 30 teams from 21 universities parti-
cipated in the first four preliminary rounds. Following these rounds,teams from the University of Kita-
kyushu and Tokyo Institute of Technology mounted the stage for the grand final debate. The result was
very close at 10-9 in favor of the Kitakyushu winning the championship cup and two roundtrip JAL
tickets to England. This year more than 100 people volunteered to serve, On November 4, at 2:00 a.m ,
Television Tokyo(Channel 12) broadcast a 30-minute prigram on this competition.

For the grand final, the motion was "This House believes that weapons of mass destruction
are necessary to maintain international security"

In the party after the competition,ESUJ's Vice-Chairman Mr Akashi proposes a toast
and appreciates the generous cooperation that all the participants gave to make the
event successful.
