Lecture
by Mr. John Tancock, January 2004
|
A lecture about auction by Mr.John Tancock, vice president of
the New York office of Sotheby's,
followed by an actual demonstraion of a real auction, took
place at the Japan National Press Club
on January 22. While showing slides, Mr.Tancock described
prized discoveries such as an original
copy of the American Declaration of Independence found
among old documents bought for $4 at
a flea market and subsequently sold for $2 million;
and a hand-written score by Beethoven which
sold for a huge price. Following the
Q&A sesion, Mr.Shibayama, president of Sotheby's Japan, began
an actual auction. Objects donated by ESUJ members were put
on the block. Gradually, following
Mr.Shibayama's skilful leadership,increasing high offers
were made by bidders from the audience, until
the hammer fell. For a momen it was as if we were among the
world's millionaires,enjoying an evening
of auctiioning. Proceeds of the sale were donated to the
ESUJ. Thanks to everyone who participated
