An Invitation to Japanese Traditional
Music
For our final lecture of the year, we
had the special treat of Mr Yoshihiko Tokumaru as our speaker
accompanied by performing artist Ms Hiroe Yonekawa, a practitioner
of the Zuita and Ikuta School of Koto Music, on Teusday, October
26 at the Japan National Press Club, with 43 ESUJ members and
foreign students attending. MrTokumaru gave an outline of the
history of hogaku, and referred to special characteristics of
the four basic instruments of hogaku, the koto, samisen, koky
( not a Chinese instrument) and shakuhachi, with Ms Yonekawa
playing extracts, mainly on koto playing. The audience was quite
impressed by the theoretical analysis of MrTokumaru and enchanted
by Ms Yonekawa's koto playing. |
