The Charm of Ukiyo-e Prints in Western Eyes
On Saturday March 30, Mr. Ken Caplan and Ms Laura Mueller
gave a talk about Ukiyoe. The gathering was held at the
Italian ambassador's residence through the kindness of Italian
Ambassador Menegatti, with more than 80 people in attendance,
including many non-Japanese. Ms Mueller showed slides with
her presentation, and Mr. Caplan estimated the value of
Ukiyoe prints which had been brought to the lecture and
explained how he arrived at his estimates. He also brought
along some very valuable Ukiyoe prints to show the audience.
Keeping in mind the earlier Newsletter item, we also unexpectedly
learned that Frank Lloyd Wright had been a great collector
of Ukiyoe prints. After the talk, tea was provided by the
ambassador and his wife, and we were able to enjoy one of
the best Japanese gardens in Tokyo on this beautiful day.
