ESUJ Lecture (in English)
The Third Japan
Lecture by Mr. Sam Jameson
Former Tokyo Bureau Chief of the Los Angeles Times
Dramatic changes in Japan are observed by a veteran American
journalist who has lived here for more than 40 years. Sam
Jameson's "First Japan" started with the opening of the
country in the 19th century and continued with its pursuit
of becoming a rich and strong country up to its defeat in
World War II. A Second Japan emerged from the ruins and
achieved miraculous economic growth, which was crushed by
the collapse of the bubble economy. The Third Japan opened
with "a lost decade", and the country is still struggling
to find the right way to go. But the Third Japan, like the
First and Second Japans, will no doubt once more be a period
of major change. Mr. Jameson explores Japan's prospects
for the future from the wide perspective of his journalistic
viewpoint.
