An Invitation to Japanese Traditional Music

ESUJ will present one of its ever-popular lectures in English, this time on the topic of Japanese music. How did the tradition of Japanese music, or ヤhogakuユ, begin, take root and evolve? What are the special features of Japanese instruments? And what about its global spread? This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Japanese music accompanied by an actual koto demonstration. Not to be missed.

Lecturer: Mr. TOKUMARU Yosihiko
Professor, University of the Air; professor emeritus(musicology and fine arts policy), Ochanomizu University, Tokyo; studied musicology and aesthetics at Tokyo University; has also taught musicology at the University of Montreal and University of California, Los Angeles; author of numerous written works.

Performing Artist: Ms. YONEKAWA Hiroe
Ziuta and Ikuta School of sokyoku (koto music); plays syamisen (shamisen), koto, and kokyu(Japanese three-stringed fiddle); studied these musical genres from childhood with her mother, YONEKAWA Tosiko (Living National Treasure, Person of Cultural Merit) and subsequently studied music at NHK's school of Japanese contemporary music in Tokyo; actively performs and composes throughout Japan and abroad; frequently performs with symphony orchestras; awarded Agency of Cultural Affairsユ Arts Festival Award in 1995, as well as other awards.
