The Future of Opera in Japan

Lecture by Mr Thomas Novohradsky
Artistic Director (Opera), New National Theatre, Tokyo


For the lecture following this year's ESUJ Annual General Meeting, we have invited Mr Thomas Novohradsky, successor to Kiyoshi Igarashi as the first non-Japanese Artistic Director for Opera at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Mr Novohradsky is very accomplished in the field of opera production having formerly served as the production manager of the Vienna State Opera. He is very knowledgable about the present state and future prospects of opera in Japan as well as world trends in opera and will delight opera fans, and those who are not so familiar with opera as well, with his insider's description of the splendid world of opera. Don't miss this chance to hear his wonderful talk full of anecdotes, and be sure to invite your music loving friends!

Thomas Novohradsky
Born in 1959. Graduated from University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna in 1980. Assistant stage director of Wiener Staatsoper from 1982. Prior to that, he held the position of assistant stage director at the Theatre, St.Gallen in Switzerland. Has also worked as assistant stage director in other major music centres of Europe including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and the Salsburg Festival. Appointed production manager of the Wiener Staatsoper in 1993, serving as production manager for the Wiener Staatsoper's Japan tour the following year. Appointed to current position in October, 2003.
