The Present State of China: Perspective of the Tokyo Bureau Chief of The Economist Magazine


Lecture by Mr. Dominic Ziegler

The next ESUJ lecture will be given by Mr. Dominic Ziegler, Bureau Chief of Britain's Economist Magazine, which is highly regarded by world leaders. Mr. Ziegler covers all of Asia in addition to Japan and recently spent an extended period of time in China gathering information on the internal state of affairs of the country. Attention around the world is focused on China as it prepares to host the Olympic Games and continues its phenomenal economic development amidst problems with its exports from foodstuffs to branded goods. Mr. Ziegler is also planning to touch on how the use of English has been changing recently around the world.

Mr. Dominic Ziegler Joined The Economist in 1986 as a financial reporter. He went on to become Finance Editor, then Washington Correspondent from 1991-94. He was the paper's China Correspondent from 1994-2000, based first in Hong Kong and then Beijing. He went back to London as Finance and Economics Editor in 2001. In 2004, he returned to the States as an acting Washington Correspondent, and after that stood in for half a year as editor of the Books and Arts section, before serving as deputy editor of Intelligent Life, an Economist publication. He now runs the Tokyo bureau, while also writing an internet column.
