In Commemoration of the ESU International Council Meeting in Japan:
Special Symposium upon the 10th Anniversary of the Founding of ESUJ

English Education in Non-English Speaking Countries

With the spread of globalization and the binding together of the world through the Internet, English has become the international language, whether this is approved of or not, and it is indispensable to know English today. Countries whose mother tongue is English are in an advantageous position as far as international communication is concerned. How are non-English speaking countries to respond? In Japan, a heated debate is taking place regarding the teaching of English in primary and junior high schools. Other non-English Speaking Countries are passionate about English and avidly pursuing English education. What is the approach of individual countries to this situation?

The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is a worldwide organization with a long tradition which has the objective of deepening mutual understanding and friendship through the spread of English as the common international language. This year the ESU Annual International Council Meeting will take place in Tokyo, the first time the meeting has ever been held in the Far East. ESUJ will also be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its founding and are hosting this public symposium to mark the occasion, with Mr. Yasushi Akashi as moderator. Please make sure to attend.

(Discussion will be in English with simultaneous interpretation provided.)
