Museum Tour No. 5!
Cherry Blossom Time in Kamakura :
Visit to a Traditional Japanese Farmhouse
|
We will visit a 250-year old Gasshozukuri-style farmhouse in Kamakura.
The house was transported from the countryside to Kamakura's Genjiyama, which has views of both Sagami Bay and Mount Fuji. It has a steep-angled thatched roof constructed of huge beams and rebuilt as a 150 tsubo 'new' traditional farmhouse. It has been greatly praised by noted visitors from abroad for its beautiful architecture.
The present owner, Mr Yoshihiro Takishita, will give us a guided tour. |

Yoshiro Takishita
Born 1945, in Gifu Prefecture. 1967, graduated from law faculty of Waseda University. While there, he learned of a 250-year-old farmhouse (minka) near his home town that was about to be submerged in the construction of a local reservoir and arranged to have the house moved to Kamakura and reconstructed there. After that, he visited 36 countries in 18 months. Upon his return to Japan in 1971, he established the House of Antiques. Along with dealing in Japanese antiques he has devoted himself as an architect to the preservation, removal and reconstruction of old Japanese houses, or kominka. Recently he undertook the restoration of the Yanagi Soetsu house in Tokyo's Komaba district. He is head of the Association for Preserving Old Japanese Farmhouses and representative director of the House of Antiques as well as the author of Japanese Country Style (Kodansha International).
