Ambassador's Lecture Series No. 14
Bangladesh and I
H.E. Mr. Ashraf-ud-Doula Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
The Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh
The country of Bangladesh was created in 1971 upon its becoming independent from Pakistan. The "Golden Bengal", as the land was called, has long been vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones and floods and has one of the highest population densities of any country in the world, with the result that poverty has been its persistent problem.
However, today the capital Dhaka is a hive of activity. Remarkable economic growth, aided by successful adoption of new attempts and efforts including "Microcredit," IT industry joining the conventional garment industry, etc., continues to exceed 5% annually, and has propelled Bangladesh onto the list of "Next 11" prominent emerging nations after the BRICs.
With a wealth of experience both inside and outside Japan, Ambassador Ashraf-ud-Doula will speak about Bangladesh's many and varied 'faces', including its friendly relationship with Japan from the time of the nation's founding, her bountiful nature, and the Islamic culture. |
