Ambassador's Lecture Series No. 16
A New Era for Micronesia:
From Ecotourism to Relationship between Two Countries
H.E. Mr. John Fritz, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federated States of Micronesia
Micronesia is a federation of 600 small islands located north of the equator in the western Pacific Ocean, with a total area of around the same size as Amami Oshima. It has a deep connection with Japan and President Mori, the country’s current leader is a forth generation Japanese immigrant to Micronesia. Called a “natural treasure”, Micronesia has abundant tourist resources, but as there are no direct flights originating in Japan, the number of Japanese visitors to date has been limited. However, this will undoubtedly change greatly when new airport facilities open in 2011 on the island state of Pohnpei.
What can be looked forward to from a visit to Micronesia? How can the charms of the federation of islands be conveyed? Ambassador Fritz, who is so knowledgeable about and loves both countries, is enthusiastic to consider with the Japanese how to advance our relationship.
Everyone will want to know the historical and natural charms of both countries, of course. Beyond this, the ambassador would welcome opinions on how Japan and Micronesia can approach this new era. Please come and participate in this exchange!
