9th Takuwakai Luncheon
On 7th July, the ESUJ luncheon, in the series mainly for
Supporting Members, took place at the Arkhills Club, with
30 participants. At this 9th luncheon, we welcomed a very
well-known lawyer, Mr. Nobuo Takai, as a speaker. Mr.
Takai has his law office already in Shanghai and is now
preparing a new office in Beijing. The title of his talk
was "How to Succeed in Your Business in China"
- based on his own experiences. As compared with the Japanese
people who favor a harmonious group life, established
through a long history as a homogeneous nation, Chinese
people are more individualistic since they have had the
experience of being governed by other nations such as
the Yuan or Cing. Thus Chinese people always try to maximize
their entitlements while minimizing their obligations
and shift the responsibilities to others. Without recognizing
this trend, many Japanese businessmen had to face quite
a few bitter experiences. Individualism relates to family
system and proceeds to local protectionism and nepotism,
which sometimes conflicts with a law-abiding society.
However, having developed so quickly, China has no choice
but to be a constitutional state. Now in China 20,000
new lawyers are added every year. Therefore, Japanese
businessmen should recognize this trend well and should
be cautious about the Chinese legislation. Mr. Takai's
talk, with humor and scattered ironies, fully captivated
the audience.
We at ESUJ sincerely ask the ordinary members to shift to be the supporting members so that you can enjoy talks that are not available elsewhere, accompanied by a delicious lunch, as well as increase your friends and acquaintances through attendance at the ESUJ Luncheons.
English Club
The monthly English Club meeting was held on Tuesday,
19 July, at Nikkei Shimbun head office. We welcomed Ms.
Wako Onodera, a translator of screen plays, as a guest
speaker on the theme of "Screen English". She
introduced a very interesting topic of how the Japanese
people are described in Hollywood films. Onodera-san first
took up the well-known film "The Breakfast at Tiffany's",
with our favorite Audrey Hepburn. Do you remember that
a Japanese man appears in this film? A cameraman, Yumiyoshi,
living on the upper floor of Audrey's flat was the man.
But here he was described as an extremely eccentric person.
The second example was "Rising Sun", made in
1993. It is a suspense movie wherein a prostitute is murdered
at the inaugural ceremony of a new building in Los Angeles,
built by the Japanese enterprise Nakamoto. Reflecting
the era of the late 80s, when the American economy was
in a heavy recession while the Japanese bubble money was
invading the States, as symbolized by the purchase of
the Rockefeller Center Building, the Japanese businessman
was shown as "utterly unsophisticated race showing
off the strength of Yen". The third film was "Hanging
Up", starring Meg Ryan, made in 2000. In a certain
scene of this film, as a symbolic product of "high
value and reliability", a vehicle of Honda was mentioned.
This time, there was no indication of Japan bashing. What
is Japan's image at this very moment? A lively exchange
of opinions took place amongst the audience.
The English Club will have summer vacation in August and will resume from September as follows;
