Visit to the Toguri Museum of Art: Museum Tour No. 3

On March 11 under a deep blue sky, a total of 30 ESUJ members and their families visited the Toguri Museum, in the quiet 'quartier' (district) of Shoto. Mr Osamu Toguri's words of welcome were followed by the thoughtful and rigorous explanation of Ms Keiko Kikuchi, curator, and translated into English by Chairman Hanabusa, enticing tour members into the world of Imari. Starting from early Imari ware of Chinese-influenced old blue-and-white and Shonzui types from the collection's 7000 pieces, the group were able to enjoy to their heart's content various tea ceremony utensils and sake vessels of old Ko-Kutani ware, once the preserve of Japanese tea ceremony experts and later popular with the tradesmen and merchants. Originally the passion of tea ceremony aficionados in the early Edo period and evolving over time, various Imari ware tea utensils and flower vases, which can be found in only a small number of specialist museum collections, were savored by the group.

Afterward, ESUJ member Toshiko Hobo warmly welcomed the group to her nearby home, where they enjoyed a sweeping view of Tokyo while chatting about Japan's traditional culture in the world and also the world of English, concluding a fine day of fellowship among members.

English Club

English Club met on Thursday, March 23 at the Japan National Press Club, kicking off with two-minute talks, first by Paul Conroy, titled "A window to the world?" and followed by that of Kyozo Hanajima, titled "Internet Crisis". After the two-minute talks, which commenced with February's English Club, we welcomed our guest speaker. Mr Sukeyoshi Yamamoto was dispatched to the old coal-mining town of Peterlee, in the northwest of England, in the 1970's by his company NSK, a manufacturer of ball and roller bearings, to set up a manufacturing plant there. He lived there for eight years. When he arrived, the local people had almost never left town, so he had to live in an environment where the Japanese were confused with Chinese and Vietnamese. From the experience, Yamamoto-san became conscious then of British social logic and the norm of fairness based on a gritty, determined adherence to rules and principles, while today Japan feels threatened by countless rash incidents and news. Mr Yamamoto's talk based on his own broad experience and delivered in elegant and beautiful "Queen's English" set a fine example for how to give a speech.

The next meeting of English Club will take place at 6:30pm on Tuesday, April 18, at the Japan National Press Club (9th Floor, Conference Room). Our guest speaker will be Ms. Liisa Karvinen, from the Finnish Embassy.
