On June 1, ESUJ held its first Annual General Meeting after achieving corporate entity status in 2009. The event took place at International House of Japan in Roppongi and was attended by Mr David Warren, the British Ambassador to Japan and an Honorary ESUJ President. Mr Tsunetada Matsudaira, ESUJ Chairman, gave the annual report before a large audience of members.
Following the meeting, a Special Lecture was given by Mr. Minoru Makihara, Senior Corporate Advisor and Former Chairman of Mitsubishi Corporation. Mr. Makihara first described the current state of the world economy and then considered the prospects for global recovery. Until the US economy recovers, global recovery will be slow. Japan itself seems to have become inward-looking, its economy somewhat ossified, mired in raditional practices and reluctant to take risks. A very active question-and-answer session ensued. Mr. Makihara’s trenchant yet also at times humorous remarks were based on his own rich experience spanning six decades and many arts of the world.
