"May Evening Gala"
Most Successful Again! On Tuesday May 27, ESUJ's popular
early summer event "May Evening Gala" took place at Kinkei
Lounge in Meiji Kinenkan. More than 100 members and their
friends and relatives gathered including our guests such
as Professor Thakur of UN University and His Excellency
Mr. Hannachi, Tunisian Ambassado, who gave us a special
lecture last March. The big attraction of the evening was
cello recital by Ms Yuko Miyagawa. She became a cellist
under the influence of her grandfather, Maestro Hidemaro
Konoe, famous conductor who pioneered classical music in
Japan. Ms Miyagawa played an elegant and beautiful sound
of unaccompanied suite by J.S. Bach matching the classic
atmosphere of the historic chamber, while performing an
amazing Mayuzumi Toshiro's piece "Bunraku" with koto-like
sounds. Catalonian ballad "Bird Songs" played by Pablo Casals
at a United Nations general assembly was played last. After
the beautiful recital, cheerful conversations spread in
the salon with good wine and food. All attendees comfortably
mixed with everyone else in such an international gathering.
First-timers lost no time in becoming friends.
The Board Meeting Convened

of the Board Members and the Councilors was held at Meiji

English Club
Our English
Club met with Mr. Masumi ("MM") Muramatsu as chairman
on May 20 (Tues.) at the Tokyo International Forum. A guest
speaker was Ms Jillian Yorke who hails from Northeastern
England and moved to New Zealand and then to Japan 25 years
ago, making her an old Japan hand. She busies herself translating
and editing English documents at the Ministry of Economy
and International Trade (METI), and shared with us her fascinating
experience of handling routinely urgent assignments. Having
recently co-authored a book Eigo-de Buntsu Shimasenka? (on
corresponding in English), enlightening us about tips for
effective E-mail writing and how it can help us improve
our English. Jillian was followed by a short presentation
about college education in New Zealand by Mr. Minoru Kasuya,
vice chairman of the International Pacific College and a
friend of MM's. The evening was concluded with MM's talk
about some gems of quotations and anecdotes on the subject
of letter writing.
Next Club meeting will be on June 17 (Tuesday), 6:30-8:30
pm, in Room G405, Tokyo International Forum. Please do come
to this memorable 50th meeting of the English Club.
